Overview
Zebra printers accept firmware updates or upgrades using standard communication methods. The firmware file can be obtained from Zebra’s support and download page. After finding your printer and downloading the appropriate firmware file from the support site, run the self-extracting executable file (Vxx_xx_x.exe), which will generate a ZPL firmware file. Use one of the suggested methods below to send the ZPL file to the printer to update the printer firmware.
The time required to transfer the file to the printer may vary. Do not send print jobs during the upgrade process, and do not disconnect the port or power off the printer until the process is completed. The printer will automatically restart after the upgrade is finished and will print a configuration list to confirm the upgrade. Ensure the printer has media loaded, and after the new firmware file upgrade is complete, check the configuration page to confirm the firmware version.

- Find and download the latest printer firmware on the webpage.
2. After downloading, extract the firmware package. The VXX.XX.XXZ.zpl is the firmware upgrade file.
Firmware Upgrade Method 1
Use the printer driver to send the firmware upgrade file.
After installing the printer driver, right-click and select “Printer Preferences.” In the “Tools” menu, choose “Action” -> “Send File.” Then, select the firmware file to upload to the printer and click “Send.”
Note: During the firmware upgrade, make sure the printer is not powered off.
File upload speed depends on the connection method, and it is recommended to use a USB cable for the upgrade.

ZDownloader Firmware Upgrade Process
- First, connect the Zebra printer via USB and open the Zdownloader software. Find your printer.
2. Once the printer is found, select the printer and then click “Select Firmware File.”
3. Then click “Download all” to send the upgrade file (ZPL) to the printer.
Ensure the printer stays powered on during the upgrade process.
4. Wait for the printer to complete the upgrade and restart. Afterward, check the printed configuration page to confirm the firmware version matches the one you downloaded.
